How to Brew the Perfect Cup with a Coffee Drip Sachet

There is a quiet ritual to brewing a truly great cup of coffee. It does not require a barista badge or a counter full of expensive equipment. What it does require is the right method, a little patience, and a coffee that has been treated with the respect it deserves.

At Antler, we have spent over seventy years perfecting the art of roasting and blending. And we believe that the best coffee is the one you brew yourself. With a coffee drip sachet, that craft becomes simple, consistent, and endlessly rewarding.

Here is how to brew the perfect cup with a drip sachet every single time.

What You Will Need

The beauty of the drip sachet method is how little it asks of you. Before you begin, gather these items:

  • One Antler coffee drip sachet (try the Classic Blend for a bold, full-bodied cup, or the Delight Blend for something smoother and milder)
  • A standard ceramic mug (around 250ml capacity works best)
  • Fresh drinking water, preferably filtered
  • A kettle with a gooseneck spout if you have one — though any kettle will do
  • A spoon for stirring

That is all. No scale, no thermometer, no pour-over stand. Just you, the sachet, and a few minutes of your morning.

Step 1: Heat Your Water to the Right Temperature

Temperature matters more than most people realise. Water that is too hot will scorch the coffee grounds, leaving you with a bitter, burnt taste. Water that is too cool will under-extract, producing a flat, sour cup.

The sweet spot is between 90°C and 96°C.

If you are using a kettle without temperature control, simply bring the water to a rolling boil, then let it rest for thirty seconds. By the time you count to thirty, the water will have dropped to roughly the right temperature. Pour immediately after that window, and you are golden.

Step 2: Prepare the Drip Sachet

Tear open the top of your Antler drip sachet along the perforated line. Gently shake the sachet to settle the coffee grounds to the bottom. Then, open the cardboard flaps on each side and hook them securely over the rim of your mug.

The sachet should hang suspended inside the mug, with the grounds sitting above the bottom. Give the sachet a gentle tap to level the coffee bed. This ensures an even extraction from the very first drop.

Step 3: The Bloom Pour

This is the step that separates a good cup from a great one.

Pour a small amount of hot water over the grounds — just enough to saturate them completely, about 30ml or a single gentle stream lasting three seconds. The coffee will begin to “bloom,” releasing trapped carbon dioxide and allowing the fresh flavours to open up.

Wait 20 to 30 seconds. You will see small bubbles rising from the surface. That is the coffee breathing. Be patient here — this bloom is where the aroma unlocks and the flavour deepens.

Step 4: The Main Pour

Now, begin the main pour. Use a slow, steady stream of water, pouring in a circular motion starting from the centre and spiralling outward. Keep the water level inside the sachet about halfway up the grounds bed — do not let it overflow the paper filter.

Pour in stages rather than all at once. Let the water level drop by about half between each pour. This gradual, pulsing technique extracts the full range of flavours from the coffee: the brightness, the body, and the long, clean finish.

For a standard 250ml cup, the total pour time should be around two to three minutes. If it drains faster, your grind is too coarse or your pour is too aggressive. If it drains slower, your grind is too fine — though Antler drip sachets are pre-packed with the ideal grind size, so you should not encounter this.

Step 5: Remove and Enjoy

Once the last of the water has dripped through, lift the sachet by the cardboard tabs and discard it. Give your coffee a quick stir to even out any分层 (layering) of flavour, and take a moment to inhale the aroma before your first sip.

That is it. A cup brewed with intention, made exactly the way you like it, in under four minutes.

Tips for the Perfect Cup

Use filtered water. Coffee is 98% water. If your tap water has a strong taste or odor, it will end up in your cup. Filtered or bottled water makes a noticeable difference.

Keep your mug warm. Rinse your mug with hot water before brewing. A cold mug robs heat from the brew, which can mute the flavour.

Do not overfill. Each Antler drip sachet is portioned for one cup (180-220ml). Using less water makes the coffee overly strong and bitter; using more makes it thin and watery. Trust the portion.

Drink it fresh. Coffee is at its peak in the first fifteen minutes after brewing. After that, the flavours begin to dull and the oils start to oxidise. Brew what you will drink, and drink it while it is warm.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Water too hot. The number one cause of bitter drip coffee. If your coffee tastes harsh or ashy, let the boiled water rest longer before pouring.

Pouring too fast. A rushed pour means uneven extraction — some grounds will be over-extracted while others remain dry. Slow down and pour in circles.

Skipping the bloom. The bloom is not optional. Without it, carbon dioxide remains trapped in the grounds and repels the water, leading to a weak, under-developed cup.

Reusing a sachet. Drip sachets are designed for a single use. Once brewed, the oils and solubles are spent. Reusing a sachet will give you hot, brown water — not coffee.
